INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (JIRRC) 2025

*Theme: “Funding Resiliency, Not Disasters”*

This 13 October 2025, the ECOWAS Commission proudly joins the international community in commemorating the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IRRC), this year’s global theme: “Financing resilience, not disasters.” The theme calls for a profound transformation in how nations and institutions invest in Disaster Risk Reduction (PRC), prioritizing proactive resilience building over responsive crisis response.

Through the Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs (DAHS) and its Disaster Operations Centre (COC), ECOWAS has made significant progress in promoting RRC within Member States. Over the past year, ECOWAS has deployed regional multi-risk early warning systems, strengthened the capacities of national RRC agencies through targeted training programs, strengthened partnerships with development stakeholders and technical institutions, and improved visibility as well as the reactivity of the ECOWAS COC, now recognized as a regional pole of coordination in disaster management.
