Leadership Transition

Organization of West Africa Youth Appoints Ghana’s Asare Isaac as Regional Coordinator

ACCRA/ABUJA — In a strategic move aimed at rebranding and strengthening regional integration, the Organization of West Africa Youth (OWAY) has announced a significant change in its leadership hierarchy.

Following a high-level joint session held on Friday, March 6, 2026, the Council officially confirmed the appointment of Comrade Asare Isaac of Ghana as the new Regional Coordinator for the organization.

Strategic Restructuring Amid Geopolitical Shifts

The transition comes at a critical time for West African youth advocacy. The outgoing Coordinator, Mohammad Sangare of Mali, has faced significant logistical and administrative hurdles in executing his regional mandate. These challenges stem from the complex geopolitical landscape in Mali, characterized by ongoing military dialogues and the nation’s formal withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

To ensure the organization remains a cohesive and functional voice for the youth across the sub-region, the Board and Council determined that a leadership shift was necessary to maintain operational stability and diplomatic access.

A Mandate for Rebranding

During the joint session, Uyero Erarawewho, the Board Chair of Organization of West Africa Youth, emphasized that the appointment is part of a broader “rebranding” mission. The council met to discuss critical issues regarding the organization’s future, focusing on how to better serve the interests of young people across West Africa in a rapidly changing political climate.

“We are focused on shaping and rebranding this organization to meet the current realities of our region,” the Board Chair stated. “We thank Comrade Asare Isaac for accepting this responsibility, and we look forward to the guidance and vision he will bring to move this dear organization to the next level.”

Looking Forward

Asare Isaac, a respected youth advocate from Ghana, was nominated and unanimously approved by the Council. His primary task will be to bridge the gaps between youth groups in both ECOWAS and non-ECOWAS member states, ensuring that the Organization of West Africa Youth remains a unified platform for empowerment, innovation, and cross-border trade.

The organization extended its gratitude to the outgoing coordinator, Mohammad Sangare, for his service under difficult circumstances, while calling on all regional stakeholders to support the new leadership in this new era of youth mobilization.
